When you think of Canada most people think of hockey is our national sport, which to be fair is correct but wrong in the same way. The sport of lacrosse is Canada’s actual national sport and its origins with the indigenous people of North America as early as the 12th century.
Lacrosse has been a main stay in Calgary for several years, either played outside on a field or inside in a hockey arena on carpet.
When the National Lacrosse League (NLL) awarded the city a Canadian professional Lacrosse team back in 2001 with the team being named the Calgary Roughnecks this is when the city saw a huge spike in the number of children playing the game within Calgary and Southern Alberta.
The Calgary Flames Sports Bank has been lucky enough to have helped a number of different children play our national sport, by giving them free equipment.
In 2025, the Calgary Flames Sports Bank was able to help over 130 kids, with over 400 pieces of no-cost equipment. Of those 400 pieces over 100 of them were brand new helmets to ensure every child had the most up to date protection for the head.
This season, we want to be able to help even more children. Thanks to some of our great partners like ELEV8 Lacrosse, the Wood Automotive Group, public donations, and so many others we want to see more children play the fastest game on two feet.
How can you help?
1. Donate Equipment or funds directly to the Calgary Flames Sports Bank.
2. Is your children playing, have their teams host equipment drives or bottle drives.
3. Donate any year end team funds to KidSport or the Calgary Flames Sports Bank.
These are just a few ways you can get involved and help more children get off the sidelines and into the game.
