Did you have as much fun as we did last year with the Toronto Blue Jays season and their magical run to the World Series. It had been 32 years since the Blue Jays were in the World Series and were within a 90-foot dash down the third base line from winning it all. This season is looking to be another promising year for the Jays as they try and return to the Fall Classic.
However, prior to the regular season opening, players from across the Major Leagues are going for gold in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. This is a chance for players to represent their country on the world stage. For Canada, there are several great baseball players from around the majors and other leagues that will represent Canada including Calgary’s own Michael Soroka. Michael, who was born in Calgary was drafted 28th overall by the Atlanta Braves back in 2015, made his major league debut in 2018 with the Braves. He has since gone on to pitch for the Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, and this season will pitch for the Arizona Diamondbacks. During the year, Michael is not only pitching in the Major Leagues, but he is one of our Calgary Flames Sports Bank and KidSport Calgary Ambassadors.
Calgary has a rich history with baseball, from the early 1900’s with the Calgary Bronchos, to the Calgary Expos in the early 1980’s, then to the Calgary Cannon’s Triple A farm team to the Florida Marlins, Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and lastly the Seattle Mariners. Over 400 Cannons players also played in the Major Leagues. Calgary then had the teams called the Outlaws, and the Vipers before the Vipers moved just south of the city to Okotoks who are now called the Dawgs.
Now you may ask, what does all this mean regarding the Calgary Flames Sports Bank?
Well, last year the Calgary Flames Sports Bank was able to help nearly 300 children with no-cost equipment to play baseball. Within those children we gave out more than 740 pieces of equipment, including over 200 gloves, and over 100 baseballs, bats, cleats and helmets along with other various items.
Despite it being America’s past time and not having a professional team in Calgary, baseball is a beloved sport in Calgary.
This year we would love to support even more children wanting to play baseball with even more equipment, but we need your help to do this. We at the Calgary Flames Sports Bank need all things baseball related. From cleats, baseballs, pants, jerseys, jocks and jills to our two most requested items in gloves and bats.
If you have any baseball-related items you no longer use at home, the Flames Sports Bank we be thrilled to receive these donations.
You can drop them off at our office (3557-52nd Street S.E.) Monday through Friday 10:00AM to 4:00PM or to any of the Wood Automotive Car Dealerships (insert link).
Please note, we cannot take items like bases, or bats that are not wood, USA certified or BBCor. 50 certified.
Thank you for all your help, and who knows, you may be helping the next World Series Champion play the game they love.
